I took two beautiful apple pies out of the oven and let them cool on the counter. Then I remembered that I forgot to add the butter, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Crap.
So now I'm making an "apple pie bake". I'm cutting up the apple pies and adding all the missing ingredients, and I'm going to bake it for a while until they're well combined. This should be interesting!
We're going to my brother's for Thanksgiving. He's cooking the ham, and I'm bringing the veggies and pies.
The potatoes and squash have been cooked and mashed. Carrots have been cooked. Veggies are packed and in the refrigerator for tomorrow. Apples are peeled and sliced for pies.
After I rest, it's time to assemble the apple pies and make cinnamon rolls. Ever make cinnamon rolls from leftover pie crust dough? It's bliss.
Quick tip: To prevent a soggy bottom crust on fruit pies, sprinkle a tablespoon of flour into the bottom crust before adding the filling.
Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
This applesauce comes out tasting just like the middle of an apple pie.
Ingredients:
12-14 McIntosh apples (or any crisp, tart apple)
1 c sugar
3c water
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
2 Tbsp butter
Directions: Peel and core apples. Slice into large chunks. Add all ingredients to a large saucepan. Bring to boiling and then turn down to medium low and simmer uncovered 40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
While it is still warm, try it on top of vanilla ice cream!
