I found a new supplier who can offer me a much better deal on eyes than I was getting before. That savings is going to be passed on to my customers.
Over the next few weeks, you will begin to see the price of Suncatcher Eyes go down. It will take a few weeks to update my website (one-woman operation here). I have already lowered prices on Etsy. I am so happy to be able to do this!
Reader's Digest was my first exposure to literature at a very young age. My parents always kept it in the house. That was where I first became familiar with Roots, Jaws, and many other amazing books growing up. The book sections in Reader's Digest opened my eyes to mysteries, biographies, historical novels, and many other genres of writing. Actually, I credit Reader's Digest with beginning my love of reading.
My earliest memories of Reader's Digest are a simple magazine with little or no pictures on the cover. Back in the 70s and 80s, the table of contents was the cover. There weren't many celebrities or eye-catching headlines back then. In those days, you actually had to be able to read to find out what was in the magazine. Shocking, isn't it?
When I was growing up (I admit it, in the 60s and 70s), the Reader's Digest was quality literature. Read that last sentence again... quality literature. Content was more important than advertising revenue back then.
Now let's jump to this month's Reader's Digest. Check out the cover:
RD doesn't even have a real book section anymore. That was the best part of the whole magazine each month, seeing which author or best-selling novel would be chosen. Not anymore. Now RD's editorial staff focuses on eye-grabbing headlines, not caring about the quality of the content.
Let's not forget about the real reason why RD is what it is today, the advertising! Just this month alone, there were 15 pages of cardboard, get-in-the-way, annoying tear-out adverts in less than 200 pages.
Don't even get me started on RD's answer to Dear Abby... Ask Laskas.
For old times' sake, check out this photo I found on the 'net of an old RD cover... ahhh, memories:
My internet has been acting strange the past few days, cutting in and out. TDS Telecom has one of those new "improved" telephone systems where you have to press 1 if you are a customer, press 2 if you are calling from your home phone, press 3 if you are a human being, etc.
After pressing 15 numbers (seriously, I counted on my phone's display after the call), I finally got through to a human being. Unfortunately, said human being was not in this country. He had an accent that made me think he may have been in India. He told me he was in Wisconsin ... yeah, right. He must have just gotten off the plane. His accent was so thick that I had to keep asking him to repeat himself. Now let me say that I have absolutely nothing against speaking with someone in another country... as long as they know what they're talking about and can actually help me. You know you're in trouble when you can hear them flipping through their notebook in the background.
I'm sick of companies making me do more work so they can save a buck. They're sure not passing on that savings to me. Not only that, but these phone systems also fall into the category of the dumbing down of America. When I call my doctor's office, before I get to speak to a real live person, I have to hear "if this is an emergency, please hang up and dial 9-1-1." *insert sound like fingernails on a chalkboard here*
Speaking of 9-1-1, even our local emergency number has been "improved." Don't they realize how difficult it can be for those who are older or hard of hearing? My dad called 9-1-1 last week but ended up hanging up because he couldn't understand the "press 1 for this, press 2 for that". Luckily it was only some kids beating the hell out of a car and not a person.
